Prussia had a twofold problem right from the beginning of its growth in 1600, for geographically its land was separated and vulnerable to attack, while militarily, it had no means to protect it. An army was built, beginning in 1653, and that at least provided some protection. However, the other problem of vulnerability remained. This is why Frederick II considered, in 1740, taking from Austria, the province of Silesia.
