Interhalogens are covalent compounds where 1 halogen is bonded with another halogen. When 3.299g of iodine reacts with fluorine, 5.768g of IFx is formed.

(a) What type of reaction is the referenced reaction? Is the referenced reactions an oxidation-reduction reaction? If the reaction is a redox reaction, which element is oxidized and which element is reduced.

(b) What is the value of x in the product formula (IFx)?

I got part (a) okay. Here is what I believe the answer(s) to be.

I2 (g)+ F2(g) = 2IFx(?)

(a) Combination reaction

Yes, this is an oxidation-reduction reaction.

Iodine is oxidized b/c it increases in oxidation number (0 to +1). Fluorine is reduced b/c it decreases in oxidation number (0 to -1).
