Assignment:
The sociological imagination is about seeing and understanding yourself in the context of history, culture, and other social structural forces that shape your experiences and behavior. In other words, the environment around you. In this essay, I want you to apply the sociological imagination to yourself. That is, explain what the sociological imagination is and do the following four things:
1. Explain what sociologists mean by social structure, culture, and socialization. Use quotes from our book and my Canvas notes. (about 1 page)
2. Describe the places and activities that shaped your socialization process - the neighborhood, your schools, your family, and any kind of social stratification/inequality. Describe them in words (qualitative data), throw in a photo or two (visual qualitative data), and include some census data from our Discussion Board assignment (quantitative data) to help us understand what this place is like. (about 2 pages)
3. In thinking about your neighborhood and your experiences, identify a key moment where you realized and made a decision about who you are... (about 1 page). What social forces shaped your situation and your response?
4. Stop and think about the world today: The economy/job market, politics, family life, religion, education, the neighborhood... What sociological theory do you think best describes the world around you? Give an example. And how does knowing this affect what you will have to do to carve out a decent, healthy, and ethical life for yourself. (This part is an extension of Discussion Board 2, but it should be more thorough. (about 1 page))
You should have a good introduction that explains what your paper will do/be about.
Your paper should be broken up into paragraphs. one paragraph per idea. each paragraph has a lead sentence.
Your paper should have a good conclusion that recaps.
