For my historical event analysis, I have focused on the Equal Rights Amendment and its failure to win ratification. In 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention's Declaration of Principles asserted women's "sacred right to the elective franchise." Over the course of the next 12 years, voting rights remained a major goal for the emerging women's rights movement. At the end of the civil war the push to ensure equal rights to slaves emerged. However, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, which guaranteed citizenship and voting rights, did not explicitly include women in their provisions. In 1923, Alice Paul proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ensure the same rights for women but not until 1972 that a version of Paul's Equal Rights Amendment was approved by Congress and sent to the states for ratification. The research question I will be answering in my paper is: "In 1923, Alice Paul proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ensure the same rights for women and men but not until 1972 that a version of Paul's Equal Rights Amendment was approved by Congress and sent to the states for ratification what changes did this amendment bring to the States?"
