Assignment:

For your final assignment, you will craft a critique for a speech of your choosing. The speech must be a persuasive speech, and you must include an APA (7th) citation to your speech on the reference page of your essay or podcast outline. Speeches should be no more than 7 minutes and no less than 4 minutes long. A thesis is required and must be consistent throughout the speech.

Summarizing the speech is not the goal. Evaluating whether the speech was good or bad, effective, or ineffective is not the goal. You may comment on delivery when relevant, but do not focus your critique on this aspect of the speech. Your focus should be on the content-the arguments that are being made.

Here are some examples of critique topics:

Explain what makes the speech culturally significant.

What stylistic devices does the speaker employ, and how do they enrich the speech?

How does the speaker (effectively or ineffectively) engage the rhetorical situation and attempt toovercome its rhetorical constraints?

Does the speaker primarily emphasize logos, ethos, or pathos

Organization

Papers should follow a typical format, including at least all elements from the template. Students are encouraged to be creative in their writing style, while still focusing their efforts on arguing their critique.

The introduction should contextualize your speech by broadly introducing the reader to the historical and political context surrounding it. It should move from general to specific as it develops, finally arriving at your thesis and a preview of your essay (similar to how you would organize a speech). By the end of your introduction, the reader should know: what you are going to critique, what you are going to argue, and what scholarship you will use to support that argument.

The body will serve as the primary substance of your critique. Here you will walk the reader through the speech, focusing on the specific strategies or themes relevant to your critique. Make sure to cite plenty of examples and explain their rhetorical function or significance in each case. Take your time and develop your argument carefully. Be sure to resist the temptation to assume the reader automatically shares your perspective.

A strong conclusion provides a sense of closure. Like a speech, this section summarizes your argument and emphasizes its significance. It might also address research limitations and suggest opportunities for future research in this area.

Podcasts may have flexible organizational patterns, depending on the critique. Each podcast must include at least all elements included in the outline. Be sure to include transitions and signposts in your podcast to aid in its organization.
