We learned in an earlier lesson that technology change changes economic and social systems when the technology becomes accepted and used by the members of society. New inventions and innovations must be useful, they must provide value and must be an upgrade to existing technology to gain general acceptance. Even if an invention is useful, provides value or is an upgrade to existing technology that does not be it will be accepted. That is what distinguishes great Inventions and Innovations from the not so great - they are accepted by an audience and widely used. Many factors are driving the acceptance of the autonomous vehicle as a main stream product. In this unit we will look at an overview of some of the factors.
Some business people believe that the autonomous vehicle is not only a great innovation but that it is a disruptive innovation.

In business theory, disruptive innovation is innovation that creates a new market and value network or enters at the bottom of an existing market and eventually displaces established market-leading firms, products, and alliances.
