Imagine you have a liquid that has two components: 75% benzene and 25% toluene by mass (e.g. a simplified crude oil mixture). What is the mass % of each in the vapor?

Useful Information:

Po toluene = 28.4 Torr

Po benzene = 94.2 Torr

PA = XAPoA PB = XBPoB Ptot = PA + PB XA = PA/Ptot XB = PB/Ptot

Strategy: You have two phases, and you know the mass % of each in the liquid phase. Determine the mole fraction of each component in the liquid phase and use that information along with Raoult's Law to determine the partial pressure of each gas in the vapor phase. The partial pressure of each gas divided by the total pressure is equal to the mole fraction of each in the vapor phase. Then find the mass % from there.
