When magnesium metal is ignited and burned in pure nitrogen, magnesium nitride, Mg3N2 is produced. This reaction occurs to a small extent when magnesium is burned in air. When magnesium nitride is placed in water, it is decomposed to give the same magnesium containing product as formed from magnesium oxide and water. There is also a strongly odored gaseous product formed. What is the gas? Write a balanced equation that describes the reaction of magnesium nitride and water.
