A 0.1 g piece of wood dating back from ancient times emits 0.5 counts per second because of beta decay of carbon 14. The same mass of a modern piece of wood emits 16 counts per second because of beta decay of carbon 14. Explain what is the age of the ancient piece of the wood? The half life of carbon 14 is 5730 years. And presume the amount of carbon 14 in the atmosphere has stayed constant since the ancient piece of wood was formed.
