Problem
Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy - A Poetry Explication
A. Use the author's name and the title of the poem (in quotation marks) or the first line for untitled poems (in square brackets) as the title of your explication.
B. In the introduction, preview key elements of poetry that you will address in the body of the essay.
C. In a thesis statement at the end of the introduction, establish how these elements of poetry contribute to the theme (your own personal interpretation of the poem).
D. Divide up the units of the poem (e.g., by stanza, by specific lines, by actions or events)? In each body paragraph of your essay, focus on one unit of the poem (as you have divided it up). Explain what is happening and how the structure of the poem shapes its meaning (how structure, speaker, figures of speech, rhyme, rhythm, etc. in each unit contributes to the theme or purpose).
E. Develop each of the body paragraphs with quotations from the poem. Integrate the quotations with signal phrases (use the author's name in your sentence or in an in-text citation after the quote).
F. Include a conclusion paragraph that summarizes the main points and makes an impact (solution to a question, resolution to a problem, suggestion of some unexamined implication or possibility).
