Sara, age 8, is referred to you by her medical doctor and school. During the past month, she has missed over 10 days of school. She complains of constant headaches and stomach aches. She is struggling to keep up in school. In session, she appears nervous and concerned about the meeting. There is no significant medical history. Reports from the school indicate frequent visits to the nurse's office due to complaints of headaches. Sara tends to avoid stressful events and is easily overwhelmed. During the initial interview, she was only able to describe her physical problems. She has few friends and she speaks slowly and is quite constricted in her emotional tone. During the initial intake, Sara stated, "I hate school." Sara reports she is happiest when she is with her Mom.
