Analysis Assignment -

Purpose: To assess skills in data management and statistical analysis using t tests.

The goal of the assignment is to allow students to demonstrate their ability to conduct and analyze a statistical analysis using a paired and independent samples t-tests.

Students should read all the Week 1 - 4 readings, watch all the videos, and practice with the applets before completing the assignment. Students are encouraged to work with classmates and instructors when preparing the assignment. However, each student's final output file, and presentation file should be unique to the student and reflect his/her background, experience, expertise, and integrity. Please list the names of any classmates you collaborated with at the top of the assignment responses.

Students are expected to use the feedback they got from their instructors on previous assignments as they prepare for this assignment. Each response should be clear and concise, using graduate-level writing, complete sentences, and respond to the question directly.

This assignment uses the course data file that each student created at Immersion. Even though the data are from a real-life survey, this assignment requires you to approach the data as if it were data from your own clinical scholarly project as described in the following scenario.

Scenario for Analysis -

Your CSP Chair, Dr. Abby Normal, has reviewed your work and the memo you submitted outlining the descriptive characteristics of the data set. You have completed your intervention and are ready to begin analyzing data.

For this assignment you will evaluate four research questions using two different types of t-tests and we will focus on the following variables of interest: bmi_pre, bmi_post, married, alcohol, female. You may wish to draw on the results of your prior analyses to fully respond to these questions.

RQ1: Is there a difference in patient BMI following the "Eat Your Heart Out" education intervention?

RQ2: Prior to the intervention, was there a difference in patient BMI based on marital status?

RQ3: Prior to the intervention, was there a difference in patient BMI based on alcohol consumption?

RQ4: Prior to the intervention, was there a difference in patient BMI based on gender?

Step 1: Open your Course SPSS data file

Step 2 (SPSS Output): Run the following statistics in a new (blank) output file:

  • To confirm the work is your own, first display the data file information in SPSS by going to File, Display Data File Information, Working File before beginning your analysis.
  • Frequency table of pre_bmi and post_bmi with a report of the mean and standard deviation.
  • Paired samples t-test comparing the pre_bmi mean and the post_bmi mean.
  • Independent samples t-test on pre_bmi by marital status (married).
  • Independent samples t-test on pre_bmi by gender (female).
  • Independent samples t-test on pre_bmi by alcohol consumption (alcohol).
  • Save the SPSS output file to a place on your computer where you can find it again. Name the file with your last name, the assignment number, the file type, and the date - Using the format., Lastname2_Output_MMDDYYYY.

Step 3: Respond to the following questions. Your responses should follow APA formatting guidelines (e.g., double-spaced, referenced, etc.)

1. (Variables) In your own words, describe the variables of interest. In your description, make sure to include at least one measure of central tendency and one measure of variation. Your descriptions should be substantive sentences describing your data beyond simply reporting descriptive statistics.

2. (Tables) Create two APA tables: one for your paired samples t-test and one for your independent-samples t-tests.

3. (Analysis)

a. In one to two sentences each, explain the variables of interest, what they measure, and how.

b. Draw conclusions about RQI based on the analysis you conducted. Address the following:

i. What is the difference?

ii. Is it statistically significant? Explain.

iii. Explain two statistics from your analysis that support your significance.

iv. Is it clinically significant? Explain.

v. What is the sample size for this statistical test?

vi. What are the assumptions for the test and how are they met?

c. Draw conclusions about RQ 2, 3, and 4 based on the analysis you conducted. For each research question, address the following:

i. What is the difference?

ii. Is it statistically significant? Explain.

iii. Explain two statistics from your analysis that support your significance.

iv. Is it clinically significant? Explain.

v. What are the assumptions for the test and are they met?

vi. What is the sample size for this statistical test?

vii. What does this analysis tell you about your subjects pre-intervention? Why is this useful?

4. Prepare a brief memo for your CSP chair, Dr. Abby Normal, summarizing the findings of your analysis and proposing a direction for further evaluation. Use statistical jargon sparingly and, when you do, explain what you mean. Focus on substantive interpretation supported by APA format statistics. Be sure to discuss whether your results can be attributed to the intervention and other possible explanations.

5. Save the document using the format: Lastname2_Analysis_MMDDYYY.

Step 4: Submit your 2 files for grading.

This assignment must be submitted by Sunday, end of Week 4. Students attach only two files for grading: (1) SPSS output file for all analysis, and (2) Microsoft Word document responding to the assignment questions. Student work will be graded with a rubric and individual feedback from instructors will be posted. Students are expected to use the feedback in preparing for the next assignments. I am attaching the SPSS data that goes with this assignment.
