Assignment:

A researcher wants to identify regions of the genome in maize that have experienced positive selection during the domestication of maize from its wild progenitor teosinte. They sequence the genomes of several maize and teosinte plants. Explain two measures of genetic diversity that they could use to examine variation across the genome using this sequence data.

In regions of the genome that have experienced recent positive selection in maize during domestication (i.e., a selective sweep), how should these measures of genetic diversity compare in maize and in teosinte and why? What other indicators of a selective sweep could they look for?

What types of genes would you predict should show signatures of a selective sweep in this comparison?
