Case - Marvin Hayes (Rectal Cancer, Colostomy)
Communication Exercises:
Question 1. When you enter the room with your instructor to give Mr. Hayes' morning medications, you find him sitting in bed, holding his wife's hand, crying about his cancer diagnosis. Respond to Mr. Hayes' concerns and ensure that you are also able to give his medications.
Question 2. Mr. Hayes is now at a point where he is interested in learning about ostomy care. Explain to him how he will empty and change his ostomy bag at home.
Question 3. After you are done teaching Mr. Hayes about his new ostomy, he states "I'm never going to be able to leave the house now that I have a poop bag on my stomach." Assure Mr. Hayes that people with ostomies can live normal lives.
Question 4. Begin a conversation with Mr. Hayes that would help you assess whether or not he is ready to advance from a liquid to a regular diet.
Case - Mona Hernandez (Pneumonia)
Communication Exercises:
Question 1. You are preparing morning medications for Mrs. Hernandez. When you tell her that she is scheduled to receive a subcutaneous blood thinner injection called Heparin, she states "I don't want that shot in my stomach. It hurts too much." Talk with her about the importance of heparin injections during a hospital stay.
Question 2. Educate Mrs. Hernandez on the need for supplemental oxygen and breathing exercises, including incentive spirometry and coughing and deep breathing. Also explain to her how the administration of PRN guaifenesin may help her symptoms.
Question 3. While encouraging Mrs. Hernandez to get up and walk around her room or sit up in the chair, she states "I just don't want to get out of bed. I'm too tired and too sick." Educate her on the importance of mobility for muscle strength and lung expansion.
Question 4. While you are attempting to give Mrs. Hernandez the ordered subcutaneous heparin injection, the needle bounces back off her abdominal tissue. She exclaims, "whoa! what just happened?"
