Strategic Management

The purpose of this assessment is to see how large companies can be viewed through various dimensions of strategy. 

  1. Go to the SENSEX website asiaindex.co.in/indices/equity/sp-bse-sensex and select one of the 30 Indian companies listed as constituents of the SENSEX.
  2. Go to the Dow-Jones Industrial Average (DJAI) website (https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/index/DJIA) and select one of the 30 US companies listed as constituents of the DJIA.

Select your companies from the same or closely related industries.

Please note that try to refer to the official website of the company for all details. In case you need to refer to any other source for any details, make sure to add the citations and references for the same.

For BOTH selected companies, answer the following questions. They each address different dimensions of strategy. Review the course content as required. 

  1. For the SENSEX Company, what is the company vision and mission? Also, provide the formal source of reference. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  2. For the SENSEX company, report its profitability based on the annual report and explain what you understand from it? Also, provide the formal source of reference of Annual Report. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  3. For the SENSEX Company, identify two key resources (tangible/intangible/ human). Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  4. For the SENSEX Company, identify two key capabilities (operational/dynamic). Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  5. For the SENSEX company, draw a Five Forces diagram with one key entry for each force. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  6. For the SENSEX Company, state a competitive cost advantage for the identified product or service. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  7. For the SENSEX Company, state a competitive differentiation advantage for an identified product or service. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  8. For the SENSEX Company, give an example of horizontal integration. Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  9. For the SENSEX Company, give an example of vertical integration. Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  10. For the SENSEX Company, identify the company as one of International, Multi-domestic, Global, or Transnational. Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  11. For the SENSEX Company, give an example of diversification. Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  12. For the SENSEX Company, place a major division of the company in one of the sections of EITHER the BCG Matrix OR the GE-McKinsey Matrix. Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  13. For the SENSEX Company, give an example of a strategic alliance. An alliance partner should be identified together with the nature of the alliance. Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  14. For the SENSEX Company, give an example of innovation. Is the innovation incremental or radical? Justify your answer. (b) Repeat part a for the DJIA company.
  15. Based on your answers for Questions 1-14, state two ways in which the SENSEX Company and the DJIA Company are similar. Justify your answer. (b) Based on your answers for Questions 1-14, state two ways in which the SENSEX Company and the DJIA Company are different. Justify your answer.
