Thoughtful response/feedback to the discussion below:
My focus in chapter 3 was on the Career Success and Age concept. I found this interesting since I work with a wide age range of people in my department. I have some team members who like to communicate verbally about changes while Gen Y's and Zs prefer being notified of changes electronically for instance by email. Preferences like this differentiate the viewpoints of career success amongst the multigenerational workforces. This also challenges me as a supervisor since I want to provide all possible opportunities to them for a successful career. I found an article that went over these kinds of challenges and also laid out how the different age groups like to be managed (link below). I think the different age groups and their views relate to the era in which they were raised. Looking at the baby boomers they worked in an environment where they were thankful to have a job, worked hard to earn a living, college wasn't affordable, and as the article says, "valued face-to-face interactions" ( (Paychex Worx, 2019).
Generation X workers began to see the world of technology as a new skill needed and if utilized to their advantage it could lessen the workload. Technology took a lot of the manual work out of the equation and helped create new jobs and job opportunities that weren't available for the baby boomers at first. I remember people carrying briefcases around, and now computers and laptops are the new briefcases. It's the changes in technology that each generation has had to adjust to in order to align them to their goals to be successful.
Reading on the decision-making approach concept is something I see at my company as a challenge for our upper management (more Gen X) with the Gen Y's and Z's. I think technology can only go so far then comes experience when making decisions. But setting the tone as a leader as our textbook mentioned is important. Making it clear at the beginning of the meeting if the decision is open for discussion or already decided can keep the meeting on track.
