Suppose some neighborhoods have playgrounds and some don't, and an economist wants to estimate the effect on children's health of a neighborhood playground. The neighborhoods are divided by rivers and highways so that few children have access to playgrounds that are located outside of the neighborhood where they live. A researcher randomly selects children from playgrounds and then compares their health with the health of a randomly selected sample of children who live in neighborhoods without playgrounds. Is this a valid identification strategy?
