We generally assume that when we go to work, we are in a safe and healthy environment. That is not always the case. Accidents can happen at any time and at any place and there are health hazards that might create problems for workers. Consider equipment, lighting, heat and air systems, computer stations and even employee dress! Housekeeping and maintenance must be meticulously maintained. Wet floors are slippery and loose wiring or frayed carpets could lead to falls and injury. Even the most innocent of items and settings can pose potential health and safety hazards. While employees often take unnecessary risks at work, it is ultimately the responsibility of the organization to provide a safe and healthy place to work.
Assume you are an HR manager or a line manager at your current place of employment. If you do not currently work, you can use a previous place of employment or that of a friend or relative.
Your firm has seen an increase in the number of work related accidents and injuries. Your senior supervisor has tasked you with determining policies that must be put into place and a training program for your employees.
•Describe the type of organization you are using and describe the type of work involved.
•Identify the safety and health hazards that you think exist.
•Determine a list of policies that you would put into place.
•Outline a training program that you could institute for your employees.
•In conclusion, summarize what results you expect to achieve with your proposed policies and programs.
