Sihle had a performance management meeting with her supervisor, Takalo. The purpose of the meeting was for the two of them to discuss Sihle's performance against the performance objective that were set out six months previously. Sihle met most, but not all the objectives. In her mind, there were good reasons for not attaining all the objectives. Firstly, the current economic climate was climate was challenging and sales were not as good as they used to be. In addition, she had some personal challenges at home, and her family came first. She fell behind with her admin responsibilities, but she did not regard this as a big issue. She felt Takalo was unnecessarily negative towards her. He spoke loudly and called her irresponsible and negligent. She was so upset about the feedback he gave her that she did not say a word. She left his office and had to recompose herself in the locker room. She then phoned her friend in the operations department to plan her next move. Takalo on the other hand was under pressure. He had recently become aware that the sales figures for his unit had dropped and that customer complaints had increased. His manager was starting to ask questions. He was suddenly worried that any further promotion for him would be in jeopardy. He was goal directed and believed in hard work. He was frustrated that he had to rely on other people to meet his goals. If only they were conscientious as he was. Sihle should know that poor administration results in poor tracking of customers and customer needs.
