Explain the three roles of the semicolon.
Question 1. To link two or more related independent clauses:
In 1900, it took three days to travel from Chicago to Birmingham; in 2000, it took three hours to travel from Chicago to Birmingham.
Question 2. Before conjunctive adverbs and transitional expressions:
Moving the truck was quite difficult; for example, whenever John pressed the pedal, the truck went into reverse.
Question 3. To separate elements which become categories on their own:
Only three teams have won the championship twice in a row: the Panthers, who won in 1961, 1965, and 1969; the Bears, who won in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974; and the Chiefs, who won in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999.
