Unit 2 Construction Technology - BTEC HND Quantity Surveying
Learning Outcome 1: Explain the terminology used in construction technology.
Learning Outcome 2: Describe the different techniques used to construct a range of substructures and superstructures, including their function and design selection criteria.
Learning Outcome 3: Identify the different types of civil engineering/infrastructure technology used in support of buildings.
Learning Outcome 4: Illustrate the supply and distribution of a range of building services and how they are accommodated within the building.
Assignment:
You have recently gained employment with a contracting firm. The company provides a wide range of services for projects of all sizes. Lately, the firm has been seeing a slow-down in new contracts. To address this, the Board of Directors have decided to produce a report for sign-off by its management board, to help potential clients understand the nature of work that the company undertakes. The purpose of the report is to showcase a recent project that the company has undertaken. You have been asked to prepare this report.
Based on a selected project, the report should cover the following areas:
• Construction Terminology - This will provide the client with key informationabout the terminology used in construction and construction technology and how functional characteristics, design selection criteria and sustainability may influence the design of the building. The difference between residential, commercial and industrial building needs to be evaluated.
• Superstructure & Substructure - This section will assist the client in understanding theparticulars of structural and civil engineering work that may involve, and should:
a) Describe the role of pre-design studies involved in the project
b) Discuss the design and functional characteristics of superstructures and substructures. In addition, you should analyse how site conditions impacted on the design of foundations.
c) Describe techniques used for remediating of the site prior to the commencement of construction on site by civil engineering works.
d) Describe the types of substructure works (Eg. Basement constructions) carried by Civil Engineers
e) Explain the characteristics and criteria for primary and secondary elements ofsuperstructures/substructures and detail how component parts of a superstructure or substructure work together to fulfil the required functions of the project.
f) Analyse different types of structural frames that could be used to carry theprimary and secondary elements of the superstructure
g) Building Services - This section of the report will help the client understand the typesof work included in building services contracts and should:
1) Analyse the range of services that may be required within such building and explain how thesupply and distribution of the primary services may impact on the overall design of the said building.
2) Demonstrate how primary services may be facilitated by superstructure elements within the construction process.
The report should make use of any drawings, diagrams and data that may help to support your explanation of the various aspects. Any material that is taken from other sources, must be suitably cited and referenced.
