Problem- When solid KNO3 is dissolved in a calorimeter, the temperature of the solvent (water in this case) decreases. By convention, this is a negative heat flow from the system containing the water (-q). However the dissolution of KNO3 is always described as an endothermic process requiring heat from the surroundings (+q). Explain this apparent incongruity.
