Objective
This assignment provides an opportunity to practice writing an effective persuasive business message in a workplace context. The message being sent may be from the perspective of someone that holds a position of formal authority such as a manager or even a Chief Executive Officer. It can also be from the perspective of an employee that does not hold a position of formal authority.
Persuasion is a process in which the communicator attempts to influence another person or persons to change their attitude or behavior; or to take some specific action in an atmosphere of free choice. Persuasion involves a conscious effort to influence another person with the belief that change is possible. Persuasion can be accomplished through different channels of communication.
A Strategic Approach
The strategic approach is one that combines the written message with at least one other channel for communication such as a face- to - face conversation. The focus for learning is on both process and product. The final product will be in the form of an e-mail, memo or letter. There is a choice of topics: (a) address a situation you would like to influence in your current workplace; or (b) address a situation you would have liked to influence in a former workplace or (c) address a hypothetical situation that is suitable for influencing in a workplace context.
There are two written parts to the assignment.
Part 1 - Written component for Process (approximately 2 pages)
Describe the context/situation and purpose of the message
Explain the strategic approach you using to combine the written message (e-mail, memo or letter) combined with at least one other channel.
Identify the direct or indirect strategy that you will develop and why
Respond to relevant questions and address the steps in the 3X3 Writing Process as it applies to your persuasive message. Please include the draft e-mail, memo Or letter in this section.
Part 2 - Written component for Product (1 page)
The final product will be a professionally written message that is the result of careful consideration of the process identified in Part 1.
