The poem makes use of the literary device called DRAMATIC IRONY. It has a mix of meanings, and one of them is the speaker says the opposite of what the writer intended. It also is when the reader/viewer knows more than the speaker. In this poem, as Brooks will explain below, the speaker has seen some young men (school-aged) in a pool hall, and what they say about themselves is not quite what the author sees in them.
