An experiment was done utilizing a simple spectrophotometer. An aspirin tablet was added to 2mL of 1 M sodium hydroxide solution and 10mL of water, and brought to boil to dissolve the tablet. The solution was then diluted to 100mL with water. 1.00 mL of this diluted solution was diluted to 50mL with an iron (III) chloride solution of 0.039M.
The concentration of the dianion of salicylic acid in the 100mL sodium hydroxide solution was 0.2 M NaoH. The number of moles of the dianion of salicylic acid in the 100mL sodium hydroxide stock solution was 2.331 x 10 -3 moles. The number of molesof acetylsalicylic acid initially presents and therefore also in the aspirin tablet was 0.0023mol. The mass of acetylsalicylic acid in the aspirin tablet was 0.42g.
Explain what percentage of acetylsalicylic acid was in the aspirin tablet?
