Assessment - Artificial Intelligence (AI): Innovation in-to change.
Your Task
Analyse a given "innovative" company which has embraced artificial intelligence/ data science / machine learning and write report-style responses which explains the innovation and change process that has played-out.
Assessment Description
This individual assessment requires students to draw on the topics studied in Weeks 1-8 regarding innovation and change management, and to connect these to the most significant change both impacting and being embraced by most businesses globally, namely, generative artificial intelligence (gen AI - including data, and machine learning).
For a given company [case] students are required to research, analyse and report on how the innovation and change has played-out for the company taking into account the industry and general environment and, more specifically, internally in terms of risk, resistance, leadership and culture as well as in terms of changes to structure, resources, capabilities and operations.
Learning outcome 1: Analyse the models and frameworks that guide the principles of effectively leading change and innovation in organisations.
Learning outcome 2: Evaluate organisational structures in an international context in relation to ethically managing innovation across borders.
Learning outcome 3: Evaluate the risks inherent in the change management process, the reasons why change fails and how these can be overcome.
Assessment Instructions
Students must select one (1) company [case] from the following list, which is a sample of companies who have recently embraced generative AI as an innovation into their business operation/s:
- Netflix
- Boeing
- JP Morgan Chase
- Johnson & Johnson
- Exxon Mobil
- Tesla
Once the company [case] has been chosen, students must undertake further research about the implementation of generative AI at that company. Students should focus their research and subsequent analysis on innovation and change within the company in terms of the theories and models studied in this subject.
Students must then prepare a 1500 word written report-style response which explains the process of innovation and change that has taken place in the chosen company [case] by responding to each of the following:
A description and explanation of the use of AI in the company and specifically why the innovation is being "implemented" at/in this company now.
Explain the scale and pace of the innovation/change in the company, and specifically identify what needed to be changed in the business in terms of strategy, structure, culture, resources, capabilities, training, jobs, etc.
Investigate and discuss any impediments or impacts encountered or likely to be encountered by the company directly related to the implementation of the AI innovation from the perspective of both the different stakeholder groups (e.g. employees etc).
Identify the leader of change in the chosen case and discuss the specific traits of their leadership in terms of the success or otherwise of both the innovation process and implementation of change at this company. Consider this against what needed to be changed in (3) above.
Provide a reference list which includes all in-text citations. At least four (4) relevant theories/models discussed in this subject must be drawn upon in response to the above.
