Care ethics should be considered a kind of virtue ethics rather than an ethical theory like utilitarianism and deontology. Ethical theories such as utilitarianism rely on principles to determine the moral action that requires to be taken while care of ethics relies on the character of an individual to determine the ethical action to be taken. Like virtue ethics, care ethics concern themselves with the character of an individual rather than the rules and consequence as seen in other ethical theories.
Moral theories such as deontology require one to be unemotional and make the most rational decision in resolving a dilemma while care of ethics relies on emotional attachment such as compassion to arrive at the final decision. Some choices may be appropriate rationally but very inappropriate from a virtue perspective.
Care ethics concern themselves with the overall virtue of an individual rather than the goodness or the badness of an action. Care ethics theory aims at making individuals live a virtuous life rather than considering the weight of the consequences of each action. For instance, the moral dilemma of euthanasia care of ethics rules that such an act is morally wrong while some ethical theories might approve of the action considering the consequences of not taking such action.
