1. Find magnified photos of actual stomata (not drawings/illustrations) on-line and include small versions of them here. For each one, give the name of the plant species shown, and provide a link to your source.
a. magnified view of live guard cells, with chloroplasts visible b. magnified view of a stoma that is clearly open c. magnified view of a stoma that is clearly closed d. images that show the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf, with stomata visible on at least one side
2. For part d of stomata question 1, which side of that leaf had more stomata, the upper epidermis or the lower epidermis? Why would you expect that water lilies, whose leaves float on the surfaces of lakes or ponds, to have stomata on their upper surface, and none on the underside? And why might they tend to have a higher stomatal density (#/cm2) than many other plants?
3. Explain the roles of cell wall thickness, potassium (K+) ions and intracellular water (i.e. not the water in leaf air spaces or the external atmosphere) in stomatal opening and closing. Use Figure 36.14 in your text for guidance.
A sphere of radius R is uniformly charged to a total charge of Q. It is made to spin about an axis that passes through its center with an angular speed ω. Find the magnitude of the resulting magnetic field at the center of the sphere.
A resistor is in the shape of a cube, with each side of resistance R . Find the equivalent resistance between any two of its adjacent corners.
