V-tech, a locally-based chemical company manufactures industrial cleaners and solvents, and has a staff of over two hundred people at their laboratory and production facility. The Human Resources Manager, has instructed you to recruitment and selection methodology to hire a large groups of production workers.

Production line workers are responsible for measuring and mixing chemicals, takings samples for the quality assurance lab to test and, packaging and labelling finished products. The job requires an interesting mix of knowledge, skills and abilities. The work is quite physical, with heavy drums of chemicals handled in various stages of the production process, and quite dangerous, as many chemicals are toxic and volatile.

Workers have to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and be very diligent with weights and measures when mixing chemicals. Because of the nature of the work, there is significant staff turnover. The average length of tenure for production line workers is 19 months. For their supervisors, it is not much longer at 22 months. Line managers who are responsible for performance appraisal seldom follow HR policies and frequently missed the deadlines. Furthermore, the line managers themselves are not trained to conduct appraisal resulting in frequent rater errors among when they conduct performance appraisals.

Before preparing the recruitment advertisement, you spend some time to review the job analysis for the production workers and realised that it was last updated more than seven years ago. Most of the tasks and responsibilities listed in the job analysis are outdated and a revision is needed before an updated job description and job specification can be developed for the recruitment advertisement.
