Brief course description:

This course introduces important Management Information Systems (MIS) concepts. It surveys information systems technologies and their role in supporting a wide range of organizational functions including administrative operations, decision making, strategic initiatives, and corporate philosophies. The course also provides a managerial perspective on the use, design, and evaluation of information systems.

Course objectives:

• To introduce students to management information systems concepts with the aim of providing a strong foundation for more practical and applied work.

• To provide students with analytical and practical skills required to work with management information systems in organizations.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

• Explain the use of management information systems for improving organization performance

• Explain the role and functioning of management information systems in organizations

• Examine some of the implications of using management information systems

• Describe several types of information systems used in business (for example transaction processing systems, decision support systems, etc) and the opportunities and challenges they represent

• Describe key areas of information systems management, namely: development, operations, and use.

• Understand the role of a non-IS person in shaping the development, management, and use of information systems in organizations.
