Problem
Scenario
You are the community worker in a local organisation that has been approached by a group of community members. They are concerned with the state government's plan to remove a railway crossing in their area. The group is angry because there will be long disruptions to the traffic on the roads associated with the work and say that they have not received enough information from the state government. You have been asked to facilitate a group meeting to discuss the actions they can take to raise these issues in the public domain. In the meeting, there are two people who appear to want to lead and who keep raising their voices and taking over the conversation.
I. Describe two types of management techniques that you can apply in this meeting.
II. Explain why forming networks and working in partnerships with other concerned citizens may be beneficial for this group.
III. Explain the benefits of using a consensus system rather than a voting decision-making process when voting on the actions that the group will take.
IV. List and describe three ways that you can disseminate information to this community group.
Case study: Seeking funding.
The single mother's self-help group in your local area meet on a weekly basis and organises events such as talks about parenting and excursions with the children. They have been raising funds by charging fees for entry to the events but have found that the funds they raise are not enough for the program to continue.
I. List three resources that this group will need to fund.
II. Using the internet, research three grants this group can apply for. Explain the purpose of the grants available including a relevant web link for access to funding for the activities.
III. What would be the difference if you applied a needs-based or a gap-based approach when supporting this group?
IV. What is the difference between an asset-based and a rights-based approach in contemporary community development?
V. When working with this group, what are two examples of circumstances where you would be engaged in collecting and analysing data?
