BEGINNING

1. Explain the purpose of the business.

  • Does the company operate on a profit or non-profit basis? Explain your answer with details.
  • Re-examine the company's mission statement.  How does their mission statement exhibit this statement now and in the future?  If not, why doesn't it?
  • Where is the business located and how many locations are there?

2.      Investigate and exhibit the evolution of business you selected by creating a timeline, Select 2-3 major events throughout history that have changed the business.

  • Provide a chronological history of your business.  Use no more than 10 significant events.

3. Discuss how capitalism's four basic rights are illustrated in the operations of this business.

o Private property rights

o Choice

o Ownership

o Competition

  • What form of economic environment does this company operate (ex: monopolistic competition versus oligopoly, etc.)

4. What role does the government play in the operations of the business?

5. Describe the legal form of the business and indicate some of the advantages/disadvantages of the form.

6. How has this business exhibited corporate citizenship and responsibility of business in society?

7. Describe any "green" concepts the business might be using or plan on using in the future.

8. Identify at least two ways that social responsibility can benefit consumers

9. If you believe a company should "go green", should a company spend more money communicating their "green-ness?"  Why or why not?

10. You have been given the charge to suggest a "green" initiative that your chosen company could or should implement.  How do you determine what green initiative is the best one to choose?

11.  Give your opinions on what you think the difference is between law and ethics.  Do not research this.  This is your opinion - be aware of your assumptions and the perceptions.

12.  Now, spend some time researching both law and ethics and report on the difference between the two.  Did your assumptions change based on you what you found through your research?

o Find one legal and one ethical issue relating to your company and/or the industry and summarize the situation.  Discuss how these legal and ethical issues are driving business decisions within the company. Examples would include: Target (security problems) or General Motors (safety issues).  Many companies go through problems.  Types of problems include, but are not limited to: financial, security, harassment, safety, dishonesty, etc.

    • Include in your discussion the mission statement and ethical credo.Compare the mission statement and philosophy to your beliefs.  Are they compatible to your beliefs?  Do you feel that the Mission is being met by the organization and its employees?    How do the mission and philosophy of an organization impact or relate to the manager's role? What data or information would you need to change your mind?

1. Explain the impact of global trends on the business and the environment it operates within.

2. Discuss how your company uses diversity within the workplace and how it affects this business.

  1. Include issues of Human Resource Management, demographics, and product selection.
  2. Discuss how environmental/social initiatives have influenced/impacted this business.
  3. Explain how government regulation drives any of the business' decisions today and how they might influence decisions of tomorrow.
  4. Discuss any current news events that might impact the internal and external environment of the business. Did the news change your perceptions or opinion about this business? Why or why not?

DEVELOPMENT CONTINUED

1. Provide twelve business terms and definitions that are new to you that are used by this company.  You should be using these terms throughout your project where they make sense.

2. Describe the organizational structure of the business relative to these five functional areas:

  1. Marketing
    1. Include different forms marketing/sales/advertising used.  Who or what is the target market?
  2. Human Resources
    1. Describe the organizational structure in terms of functional or divisional (if divisional, it is by product, geography, customer, etc..)
  3. Accounting
    1. What are the most significant costs/expenses associated with this business?
    2. What is the most significant source of revenue for this business?
    3. What is the most profitable segment of this business?
  1. Finance
    • What are the primary sources of financing used by this business (example: stocks and bonds)?
  • Operations

    • Include items such as:  inventory management, quality control, and production.

2. Discuss the inter-relationship issues among the functional areas (core areas) of the organization.

3. Discuss any key aspects of the management, their leadership, planning, and people.  

  • Think about empowerment.

4. Explain how the evolution of technology has affected this business.  Provide examples of current technology being used today by the company and possible future needs.

5. Discuss how technology impacts the functional areas (core areas) of business.

6. Discuss how the basic laws of economics affect this business

7. How does international trade affect this company

8. Re-examine the company's products/services.  Provide an explanation of those products/services now that you know more about them.  

9. Describe who their customers might be and how they find /identify them.

10. How do they determine their price and/or price strategies?

11. Describe how supply and demand might affect this business' operations

12. H.  Discuss any career opportunities within the business.

13. What type of credentials are needed for a job with this company (example: type of degree/major), experience desired, and any current salary ranges.

Reflection

A. You may have known something about this company when the project started; so after this investigation identify three things you didn't know about (maybe it is a product, market, legal or environmental issue it is dealing with, ethical perspective, how it financed growth, technical issues it is dealing with, etc.) and reflect on how they impact the business model.
