Assignment:

Imagine you are a member of the House of Representatives and that a survey on immigration was conducted in your congressional district. The survey asked voters if they favored allowing undocumented immigrants to stay in the country or if people here without documentation should be deported as soon as possible. You don't have a strong opinion either way, but the poll results indicate that your constituents indicate strong support for allowing undocumented immigrants to stay in the country. Write a short response that:

  • Explains the purpose of measuring public opinion and the challenges in getting it accurate.
  • Articulates a clear position about whether you, as an elected official, should follow the poll and push for Congress to enact immigration reform.
  • Backs up that argument with references to concepts and evidence from course materials (American Politic Today, Bianco & Canon chapter 6).
