The topic that I chose to speak on is Eating Disorders. Eating Disorders have been receiving more awareness in the past 3 decades. We have learned about the various types and how to note that someone may be suffering from one.

4 areas that I feel need to be talked about more when it comes to Eating Disorders are:

• The mental health behind them
• The social stigma
• Cultures encouraging disorders
• Not enough education in school regarding the various types of disorders

These topics are often summarized in articles and in the education system. This is something that affects the entire would not just the United States and has seen awareness less and less the farther you get from the US. Many cultures idolize a certain body type and trash anyone who does not fit the standard, as a result, we have individuals from a young age suffer from mental health issues and build terrible eating habits. "Historical and cross-cultural experiences suggest that cultural change may be associated with increased vulnerability to eating disorders, especially when values about physical aesthetics are involved. Such change may occur across time within a given society, or on an individual level, as when an immigrant moves into a new culture"(Merry, Miller, Andres,&Pumariega,2001).

What I would like people to consider are the ways in which we can solve the issue from the root. I would also like people to understand how important early intervention is. Early intervention and being educated on the signs and symptoms of eating disorders allow for more adults to be ready to help when needed and peers to know when to ask for help.
