Genomics and Proteomics

Level 7

Learning Outcome 1: Be able to explain the principle of next generation sequencing and analyse thedata using the Linux command line and bioinformatics software.

Learning Outcome 2: Understand the key underlying theories and principles of genomics and how genomics can be used to address a range of biological questions.

Learning Outcome 3: Be able to explain how proteomics data are generated and analyse them.

How to analyse next generation sequencing data and proteomics datasets. We will examine a range of ways genomics canidentifygenetic changes that alter an organism's characteristics, particularly in respect of disease, and how organisms are related to each other.

Indicative content
• assembling sequencing data into a genome
• aligning sequencing reads to a reference genome and calling genetic variants
• determining genes in genomic sequence
• predicting functional effects of genes
• comparing genomes of related organisms
• cancer genomics
• separating and identifying proteins
• quantifying protein levels
• comparing protein composition and abundance between cells, tissues and conditions
• targeted and untargeted proteomics methods.
