Learning Outcome 1: Be able to explain the principle of next generation sequencing and analyse thedata using the Linux command line and bioinformatics software.
Learning Outcome 2: Understand the key underlying theories and principles of genomics and how genomics can be used to address a range of biological questions.
Learning Outcome 3: Be able to explain how proteomics data are generated and analyse them.
How to analyse next generation sequencing data and proteomics datasets. We will examine a range of ways genomics canidentifygenetic changes that alter an organism's characteristics, particularly in respect of disease, and how organisms are related to each other.
Indicative content• assembling sequencing data into a genome• aligning sequencing reads to a reference genome and calling genetic variants• determining genes in genomic sequence• predicting functional effects of genes• comparing genomes of related organisms• cancer genomics• separating and identifying proteins• quantifying protein levels• comparing protein composition and abundance between cells, tissues and conditions• targeted and untargeted proteomics methods.
