Case Study: If I were the school social worker when Stephanie was a teenager, there would have been a few indicators that I would have looked for to determine whether or not she had suicidal ideation. When Stephanie's worker asks her what made her attempt suicide, Stephanie mentions that she was depressed (Walden 2013-2021). Signs of depression among teenagers may include "withdrawal from friends, family, and community," "mood swings," and "impulsive or reckless behavior" (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2023). Each of these signs is also an indicator to look for when questioning if an individual may have suicidal thoughts or ideations.
As her school social worker, it would have been crucial for me to respond to each of these indicators. To determine if these indicators resulted from suicidal thoughts or ideations, one way to respond would be to speak one-on-one with Stephanie. Being open and honest with individuals and asking them direct questions surrounding their behaviors and thoughts is essential in determining if they are at risk (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2023). If Stephanie opened up to me and shared that she was having suicidal thoughts, I would administer a screening that is utilized in the state I am practicing to determine if Stephanie was considered low-risk or high-risk for suicide. Typically these screenings have questions surrounding her thoughts, such as "Do you have a plan to kill yourself?" I would also speak with Stephanie calmly and support her throughout the discussion. Lastly, I would inform Stephanie that I need to let her parent or guardian know the outcome of our conversation and develop a treatment plan with her and her family.
Question: Respond to two colleagues by proposing an intervention that would address the indicators identified. Explain the potential impact of social work interventions such as this on adolescents' lives. How might Stephanie's adolescent life have improved with this intervention?
