The optical properties of an absorbing medium can be characterized by various sets of parameters. One such set is the index of refraction and the damping constant. Explain the physical significance of those parameters, and indicate how they are related to the complex dielectric constant of the medium. What other sets of parameters are commonly used to characterize the optical properties? Why are there always "sets" of parameters?
