Case Study: You are the regional manager of a regional ice cream manufacturer with two manufacturing facilities and distribution in Washington. Oregon, and California. Here are summaries of your most recent communications from a few of your employees. Terry, HR manager: In the past two weeks. Terry has received 5 complaints from warehouse staff about their hourly pay. This is unusual, because the warehouse hasjust gotten their annual raises and they are usually happy for a while after that happens. The company has a strict policy against sharing salary information and Terry suspects that a violation of this policy is behind the recent complaints. She has sent an email to all staff reminding them that any yiolab'on of company policy may result in terminab'on of employment. Email from Rene, a shift supervisor who reports to Rufus, the plant manager: "As you might already know, I am going to night school fora degree in food science. I took a sample of the ginger ice cream into the school's lab to test its contents and I found that the sample contained 20% more sugar and 12% more calories than what is reported on the label. When I talked to Rufus about this. he said that there is already a 6-month supply of cartons printed and in storage, so the labels can't be changed without signi?cant expense. Regardless of the expense. I think that the labels need to be corrected immediately. lam frustrated by Rufus' refusal to do anything about this. I am tempted to tweet about it. but I thought it would be best to let you know about the inaccurate labels before going public. Do you agree that the labels should be changed immediately?" Rufus. plant manager: Rufus has been in charge of manufacturing for the past 2 years. Recently he has been struggling to meet the production quotas that the plant was easily meeting two years ago. He says he just hasn't been able to hire good people and that is why things have slowed down.There are clear goals for each worker's daily production and he posts the high and low performers each week. He is not sure what else to do. When you ask Rufus about the labelling issue that Rene brought to you. his response is Sorry about that. I will take care of it. Rene has been getting more dif?cult to handle for a while. You know what they are like. You check in 1 week later to see what has been done to r'take care of it and you find that Rufus has ?red Rene. Candace, IT Manager: Candace says that she should be spending most of her time on planning for the expansion into Montana and Idaho scheduled for next quarter. She is behind on this project because plant employees keep calling her for emergency repairs of the computers that control their manufacturing equipment. She had recommended replacing these 2 years ago, but it hasn't happened yet.
