Assignment:

Duranti argues that language is a non-neutral medium. In daily life, as we experience language, we judge others language production and we are judged by others for our own language production. Considering the materials in Module 2, explain how the perception of language variation (not just sound variation but any kind of variation) demonstrates the ways in which language is not neutral. To answer this question, begin by choosing one of the 3 essential properties of language. Then explain how the perception of language variation demonstrates the non-neutrality of language through that essential property. Please limit your answer to 300 words or fewer.

Tip: You have an hour to write your 300 words, so edit them until you have a very clear answer that makes the most of the word maximum (i.e., says as much as possible and clearly in the allotted space). You will be graded on how much the answer makes sense and draws on the module material. You are not graded on grammar, punctuation, or style.
