Question: In Book X of Plato's Republic Socrates makes his second critique of Poetry. In addition to the substantive critique there is the suggestion that poetry is the valet to the nomos. Instead of educating the desires poetry is, at best, a reflection of them, and acts as a partner of the demos in the corruption of those with the best natures, preparing the way for tyranny. This brings together many of the themes of the Republic. This critique is followed by a myth, a philosophic poem, and a return to the images of birth and death with which the dialogue began. Explain the pedagogical value of the myth of Er that would supplant the failed education of Homer. Be sure to pay attention to the figure of Odysseus. What does this tell us about the best way of life?
