A 32-year-old man is involved in a motor vehicle accident that causes a displaced fracture of the left humerus. An x-ray confirms that the fracture is at the midshaft level of the humerus. The injury results in motor and sensory losses to his left hand. He complains of an inability to open his left hand and is unable to extend his wrist.
1. Identify the nerve that has most likely been injured in this accident.
2. State the origin of this nerve.
3. Explain the anatomical reason for why this nerve (see question 1) would be implicated in this injury.
4. Explain why injuries at this level are of most concern.
5. Explain the motor and sensory consequences of this injury, including the inability to open his left hand and extend his wrist. Include 2 major muscles that would be affected by this injury when explaining your answer.
6. Explain whether or not extension of the elbow and shoulder is still possible and provide a reason for your answer.
7. Name the blood vessel that is also at risk from this injury and explain why it is vulnerable.
