Modified lesson plan are much simpler than the regular NAEYC required lesson plan.  They only contain 6 requirements.  You must complete either a toddler modified art lesson plan.

Modified lesson plans must contain the following:

  1. Materials:  a list of things children will use to complete the lesson - list them
  2. Objective:  What you want children to learn or be able to do.  It must be an interactive and child-focused objective.  That means children will do the whole activity any way they want.  It must be something the child wants to make, not something the teacher told him/her to make.  The presentation contains  4 parts:
  3. Introduction:  Things you will say to the children to get their interest in doing the activity.  Questions you might ask them to create their interest.  You must tell them what they are going to do.  They will decide how to do it, although you may have ideas to share with them.
  4. Procedure:  What materials will you give children to successfully do the activity?  What do you need to explain to them?  How will you get them started?  What do you want them to experience and/or learn?  How will you get them started?  What kind of questions will you ask as they get started.  What will you say to them as they begin the activity?
  5. Questions to Enhance Children's Learning:  Depending on the activity, what kinds of questions will you ask them to help them figure things out.  These need to be open-ended questions, which do not have a right answer.  Children can answer any way they want.  Depending on the activity, it could be questions about making predictions about what will happen.  It can be questions asking them what kind of effects they are creating.  The idea is to get them discovering all the things they can learn through this activity.  Ideas are:  "What could happen?"  "How did you do that?"  "What will happen if . . . ?"  "I wonder if you did .. . . , what would happen?"
  6. Ending:  The close of the activity is important.  You want children to feel good about what they have created.  You might want to refer them to extension activities they could do that will allow them to keep discovering things.  How will you end the activity?  It could be different because children will do at different times.   You want to make sure they know what they discovered and make them feel good about what they have created.  You'll want to talk about how it will be displayed and when they can take a copy home.
