Materials Engineering

Learning Outcome 1: Be able to select materials and processing methods for a specific product
analyse the function/s of a product in terms of the materials' constraints on the design
identify the required properties for the product and select the most appropriate materials and processing methods.
Identify and explain the possible limitations on the product imposed by the processing and by the need to safeguard the environment and minimise costs.

Learning Outcome 2: Understands the in-service causes of failure of engineering materials.
Explain the common causes of in-service failure for products or structures produced from each or a combination of the four categories of engineering materials.
For one product or material structure, identify and explain the in-service conditions that may contribute to early failure.
Explain the methods for investigating materials failure and for estimating product service life, when a product is subject to creep and fatigue loading.
Determine and make recommendations for remedial / preventive measures for a given product or materials structure, that will help improve its service life.

Assignment Brief

Industry Scenario:
Assignment

Instant Pot Manufacturer (IPM) approaches Materials Engineering Research (MER) to investigate the possibilities of redesigning her pressure-cooking pot because the material for its external pot is no longer readily available. The pot is usually used in environments with some acid, salt, and moisture in the air.

As a Junior Research Materials Engineer for MER, you are to investigate and submit reports on:
selection of suitable materials and processing methods
in-service causes of failure of the pot materials

TASKS:
As a research engineer in MER, the Director wants you to carry out the analysis on the cooking pot and submit reports on the following Tasks:

Task 1
Describe the following four basic steps in the selection process of material for the cooking pot.
By focusing on materials working conditions (e.g., applied forces, environment, Electrical/magnetic requirements, shape, form and function of the parts), analyse the functions of all the parts of your proposed cooking pot for your company's client.

Task 2
In an experiment to evaluate the strength of the inner part of the cooking pot, a rectangular specimen of length L of the cooking pot part with thickness B and a varying width is to withstand a direct load F to the thickness. Determine the material index to be used for the selection of the material.
If 8 kN force is on specimen, based on factor of safety of 3, with the rectangular beam Young's modulus elasticity more than 10 GPa and density less than 10 Mg/m3, use the selection process above to explain your predict of the best suitable materials for the beam.
With use of merit index/index of suitability and ability to be re-used, employ important properties, select appropriate materials and advise the company on best manufacturing processing methods for the inner part of the cooking pot.
Identify and explain the possible limitations on the cooking pot by the processing and the need to safeguard the environment and minimise costs

Task 3
Explain the methods for investigating materials failure and for estimating the cooking pot service life, when is subject to creep and fatigue loading

Task 4
Determine and make recommendations for remedial/preventive measures for the cooking pot that will help improve its service life like:
Changes to cooking pot design, material,
Protective systems for corrosion and degradation
Adjusting loading and working temperature.
