Assignment:
"Introducing Hinduism"
Explain ways in which Hinduism differs from religions more well known in America.
"Hindu Belief Structure"
1. Explain the meaning of the term samsara. What does it mean? How might the concept help you understand better how to live?
2. Many westerners look at reincarnation (samsara) as a cool way to get a chance of living many lives. (My next life, maybe I'll be a rock star or President.) But this is not quite the Hindu perspective. Explain the ultimate aim (moksha) of multiple lives in Hindu thought, how to attain moksha, and how karma plays a role. What specific actions (or nonactions) do Hindus take to reach moksha?
3. Distinguish between atman and brahman. Even though these are separate ideas, at the same time, atman is identified with brahman ("atman IS brahman"). Explain how they can be considered as one, and what the author means by saying that such an understanding leads to the insight that "all duality is one." Since this is philosophical, it may require you to think about it without hurry.
4. What is the aim or purpose of a sadhu, and how might a guru aid in the process?
5. Explain both bhakti and puja, important Hindu practices.
"Debunking Common Stereotypes" & "Key Sensitivies"
- Select ONE of these stereotypes to explain and then debunk. To debunk something means to explain how it is wrong-how it is a fallacy.
- Select ONE of the "Key Sensitivities" and explain how it is an issue for some Hindus.
