Assignment - Type A

• Choose a paper from a recent scientific journal or conference proceedings on a subject related to the Topic
• Explain the main ideas presented in the publication clearly in your own words with a good standard of technical communication
• Show familiarity and appreciation of the Topic technical contents and knowledge areas and how they relate to the publication
• Critique the contents with emphasis on validity and usefulness
• Reference any other publications closely linked to the chosen one, that assisted you in forming your ideas for the discussion paper
• Present a brief talk to describe your work to the class and answer questions, in the class session in the 3rd week of the Topic
• Submit your discussion paper and a copy of the chosen publication by midnight on Friday in the 3rd week of the Topic

Assignment - Type B

• Conduct a search of online scholarly literature and/or websites to find a currently "hot" area in the Topic
• Produce a list of about 10 recent publications and/or websites which deal with that area, using a standard referencing technique
• Summarise and compare the different aspects of the area which are covered in the publications and/or websites clearly in your own words with a good standard of critical communication
• Show familiarity and appreciation of the technical contents and
knowledge areas of the Topic and how they relate to the area
• Say what you think are next steps or future directions for the area
• Present a brief talk to describe your work to the class and answer questions, in the class session in the 3rd week of the Topic
• Submit your discussion paper and a copy of the chosen publication by midnight on Friday in the 3rd week of the Topic

Type A Write a critique of a technical contribution, including references to other papers. Marking criteria for all three types A. B, C:
- familiarity and appreciation of the technical concepts and knowledge areas which are part of the Topic.
- explain the main ideas being presented clearly in the text with a good standard of written communication.
provide a clear and professional oral presentation based on the submission, including appropriate visual materials and response to questions
Marking criteria for type A only (50% weight)
- demonstrate ability to present and critique technical aspects of a scholarly paper, and relevance to the material covered in the Topic
