You are the HR manager in a tech company that has been in business for almost four years. No other HR positions exist in the company; your position is the first HR position and has been newly created.
During your first week in your new job, you learn performance management has never been conducted with any of the employees. As well, the Director of IT; Hamida, advises you that there are concerns relating to an inappropriate email that was sent out by Eli; the supervisor in the IT department.
You further learn that Eli is a staff employee who has been with the company since it first began and is highly regarded by the organization and its leaders. You also learn that Eli supervises twenty employees in the IT department and that last week he sent out an email letting his team know that the company was looking to fill a newly created Data Analyst position and that they were looking for a recent university graduate with a lot of energy and technical know-how.
One of employees who was copied on the email; Jonathan, works in this IT department. Jonathan has also been with the company since the beginning. You learn that Jonathan is a baby boomer and has gone to Hamida to let her know that he has had enough of Eli's comments; that although subtle, he finds Eli's comments to be offensive and insensitive. Further, you learn that there have been other occasions where Eli has sent out emails excluding Jonathan from team meetings and learning activities, and that Eli often jokes about Jonathan's retirement, and his slow typing speed.
Upon further investigation, you learn that although the company has a Code of Conduct and a Code of Ethics policy, it does not have a Respectful Workplace Policy, nor has it ever conducted Respectful Workplace training. What would you do?
