1. Organisations must change in response to the challenges and opportunities that present themselves in the external environment as well as to address weaknesses in the internal environment. Therefore, in order to identify what change(s) are needed the change agent should employ a diagnostic model that is based on Open Systems Theory and therefore attends to both internal and external alignment.

a. Identify and, using examples, explain the key characteristics of Open Systems Theory.

b. Using examples to illustrate your points, explain the importance of the external environment to organisational functioning and effectiveness.
