There are many issues in the healthcare system that needs to change. One particular issue is the underuse of the healthcare system. Underuse is described as medical professionals or health facilities neglecting to give patients treatment and care. This is a concerning issue because patients that are very ill are not getting the necessary treatment that is needed for them. For example, there are many states that now require public reporting of patient outcomes after stent placement (Warraich, 2022). This reporting has helped reduce the unnecessary use of stents but has also shown the underuse of stents for sick patients (Warraich, 2022). Patients who have serious heart conditions are not getting a stent placement and their lives are at risk. The underuse of the health care system is a serious problem and must be changed. Some ways in which this can be changed is nurses or professionals in the medical field become an advocate in legislative arenas. Many people do not receive healthcare because they are not insured to cover the high cost of care and some of the coverage the physicians do not accept (Bodenheimer & Grumbach, 2020). This is a serious issue that still remains today; people that are very sick are not able to get help. Medical professionals have experience, knowledge, and the skills to be great advocates and address the problems patients face and can propose ideas on what can be changed, improved, and implemented (Maryland & Gonzalez, 2012). The healthcare system needs to be utilized in a positive and appropriate way.
