To begin this discussion, go to pp 279-80 in your text and read through the section called "Internal Design Considerations."  Every pay grade has a minimum, midpoint and maximum dollar value.  The minimum is the lowest salary any job should be paid, the midpoint is the average salary representing the outside market place for those jobs in that pay grade, and the maximum is the top salary to be paid for any job in that grade.  These are all design decisions made by the compensation professional, and approved by the company executive team.

For this discussion, focus on paragraph 5 (p. 280) starting with the sentence, "the major problem...."  In your posts, discuss

  • why is this a problem from your point of view
  • do you agree with the author that it is a problem as you know it in today's workplace.
  • Offer any alternative suggestions you might have to solve this problem with seniority.
