Case Study - Canadian Pacific and International Bank

The term case study refers to both a method of analysis and a specific research design for examining a problem. Case studies are often used as a tool to facilitate learning. They portray real life situations that requires analytical thinking and decision making. Case studies have been proven to be more effective than classroom discussions and textbook reading at promoting the learning of concepts. Some case studies may have directed questions that you have to answer while others require you to extrapolate and identify the issues and work towards a solution or recommendation.

RECOMMENDED FORMAT -

Title/Cover page

  • The name of the report
  • Organization in the case study
  • Your name
  • The date

Introduction

  • Your introduction should explain the intent and scope of the report (i.e. what is does and does not cover). Most importantly, you must include an outline of the paper. The outline should identify the different sections of the report.

Company Profile

  • This helps to ensure that you have a good grasp of the organization before proceeding. If there are relevant additional details about the company and its strategic position in the selected case, you should use them as well.
  • If possible you should also be able to identify either the vision or goals of the organization as well.

Current Situation

  • Restate the case facts in a summary fashion. Assume the reader is unfamiliar with the situation.

Key Issues and Relevant Factors

  • You should examine the case and identify the key problem(s) or the opportunity that is presented. It is best to focus on a single key problem or a limited number of problems (or opportunities if there are no problems to speak of). To do this, you may need to describe the problem broadly. Inside this key problem may be smaller related problems.
  • Regardless of the approach, once you define the key problem(s) you need to be able to explain what affect or effect the issue is having on the organization. One way to describe this might be to ask, "what are the consequences to the organization of not making any change and to leaving things as they are?"
  • Relevant factors also provide additional insight into the key issues. These are other factors that likely affect the organizations efforts. For example, the company may have to follow general guidelines set by its parent company or data might only be for a certain department rather than the entire business unit. Finally, you are expected to identify critical assumptions. You should identify at least three facts in the case that you believe are true for the problem/situation to have occurred.
  • The details in your case study will greatly influence how lengthily your write-up will be.

Key Decision Criteria

Identify points that your recommended solution should include for it to be a good one. For example,

  • Improve (or at least maintain) profitability
  • Increase employee satisfactions, etc.
  • Be consistent with larger company strategy
  • Within present (or future) resources or capabilities within acceptable risk parameters,
  • Ease of speed of implementation
  • Retain flexibility
  • And more.

Typically, decision criteria are used to select among alternative approaches. For example, when you purchase a car you might compare two or three models on price, style, and safety. Different factors may have equal or different weights. There may be certain minimum standards such as "between a certain price" and after that "style" may be most important followed by "price", then "safety." In your case, you are not required to formally state alternatives. But you still must identify the characteristics or factors that your recommendation should include. You can use this as a checklist as you flush out your recommendation(s) later.

Recommendations

  • Provide a brief description of what you are recommending. Be sure that your recommendation addresses the problem or opportunities presented in the case (and the questions posed at the end of the case). Provide a justification or support for how this recommendation addresses the problem. In other words, explain why this recommendation is a good idea. Provide research support for your ideas.

Action Plan

  • You need to provide a lot of detail here. This is the section where you spell out every tiny detail about how you will roll out your solution.
  • You should review all the other sections, especially the problem and the related factors, to ensure that your action plan addresses all various challenges that you may have identified.
  • Your implementation plan should draw upon some of the research you conducted. Also, be sure to include some type of timeline.

Conclusion

  • This section provides a tidy wrap-up to end the report on a relevant note.

Reference Page

  • Include a references page with APA formatting for all additional sources of information.
  • Your completed case study should show evidence that there has been a reasonable amount of academic research to support your report. It is expected that you use additional sources of information to support your decisions.
